Lab test 'revolution' predicted for anti-ageing skin creams
A revolution in the marketing of anti-ageing skin creams based on scientific evaluation of their effects was predicted yesterday by leading dermatologists. Results of the first double blind randomised controlled trial of a skin-care product are awaited and could trigger a flood of similar trials as companies compete for domination of the multimillion-pound market, the experts said. The race to develop a scientifically proven over-the-counter product with comparable anti-ageing effects to retinoic acid, the remedy for sun-damaged skin developed as a treatment for acne more than 30 years ago, heralded a new era in the approach to skin-care products, they said. Retinoic acid causes side effects of redness, dryness and irritation in about 1 per cent of users and is only available on prescription.
Local women create natural cosmetics
Julia Brownfield and Victoria England have something in common: At some point, each of them looked at commercially available cosmetics and skin care products and thought, "I can make better stuff than this." So they set out to do it. Through determination and a great deal of trial-and-error experimentation, each developed her own line of products, created packaging and labeling, tackled the difficult task of marketing, and now each operates her own business, offering organic alternatives to traditional cosmetics. Brownfield's initial motivation was a selfish one. "I trained racehorses for 15 years, so my skin took a beating," she said. "I wanted a natural product for my skin. It was just for me." Making extensive use of the Internet, Brownfield began researching fruits and vegetables, oils and vitamins, looking for the ideal ingredients to improve the health of her skin.
Girl goes to skin clinic with acne, damages eye
TREATMENT FOR acne at a skin clinic landed 18-year-old Jaishree Nair (name changed) in the intensive care unit of a city hospital with temporary blindness and fluid in the brain. Jaishree paid Rs 20,000 for a three-month acne removal course at Kaya Skin Clinic. She was prescribed Minocin - a potent antibiotic for the duration of the course. Within a month of treatment she developed constant headaches and blurred vision. The treating dermatologist at Kaya insisted that she continue with the drug. "We suspected sinusitis or increase in eye power for failing eye-sight. But nothing came from those check-ups and the doctors suggensted that we consult a neurosurgeon. Eventually we got to know that the headache was because of increased pressure in her brain being caused by the drug given by the skin clinic," said B.

How To ... Use chocolate for your skin
Anyone who still thinks chocolate is just for eating -- and maybe drinking -- is well behind the times. Just talk with friends or browse the Internet: People are using chocolate to make soap, finger paint, candles and even sculptures. And chocolate skin-care products, for use in spas and at home, also have made their way into popular culture. For many raw foodies, it's not just about feeling great. They contend that people can get the benefit of chocolate's healthful properties by putting it on their skin. "It didn't make sense to be pure on the inside, eating a diet that was 90 percent raw, and then put all these products with preservatives on my skin," said Lisa Lennon, 40, an artist and co-founder of U.K.-based Raw Gaia, which has a Raw Chocolate Face Pack. The company specializes in organic and raw skin care products.

Trinidad sisters find burn treatment here
It has been a long journey to recovery for sisters Samdaye Hanooman, 56 and Savitri Pandeosingh, 58. First, they suffered devastating burns -- improbably, while riding to the hospital in an ambulance with Hanooman's daughter, a cancer patient. Then they lingered, suffering hallucinations and nightmares, amid prolonged squabbles, played out in public, over their medical care. The sisters' plight became a cause celebre in Trinidad and Tobago, their homeland and the scene of the freak accident. Finally, after more than two weeks the ambulance company arranged for their transport and care at Jackson Memorial Hospital's renowned burn unit, ending one phase of their ordeal and opening a new, more hopeful chapter. At Jackson, the women are undergoing grafts aimed at regenerating a new healthy layer of skin.
